It is very critical for the Tigrean people to observe, see and understand for their own national interests sake the obvious fact that, what the TPLF as an organization and its officials and operatives are doing in the name of the Tigrean people in Ethiopia in general and in Oromia in particular is not only seriously undermining the national interests of the Tigrean people but also permanently destroying it.
Let’s start with the very simple facts. As all other Ethiopian nations and nationalities, ethnic Tigrean has their own national interests. Above all, they like to become a powerful, prosperous and peaceful society. These three elements of national interests’ measurements are indivisible and inseparable. An act that undermines one will undermine all three of them. The actions of the TPLF in the rest of Ethiopia is undermining all three components of the national inerests of the Tigrean people while at face value the TPLF claim to build all three of them at once.
The power, prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are also not dependent on the military hardware, security and military officers that TPLF will raise from about five million Tigreans with the intent to use them to dominate and control the natural resources and human power of about ninety-five million other Ethiopians. Instead, the power, prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are dependent upon the ability all Tigreans to live in peace, work and trade in peace and acquire property in any part of Ethiopia in harmony with other Ethiopia’s nations and nationalities with no fear and risk to their life and property.
The power, prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are not dependent on the unlawful enrichment of certain Tigreans through the policy of land dispossession and wealth transfer from other Ethiopian nations and nationalities by using the law as a tool of dispossession or using a threat of force or use of force. TPLF’s model of land grab, theft and unlawful government contracts awarding process or channeling the financial resources of the Ethiopia people to certain Tigre individuals will not make the Tigrean people powerful, prosperous and peaceful. Instead, it will create permanent enmity between the Tigrean people, in whose name the TPLF is doing all these, and the rest of the Ethiopian people. The development by dispossession model pursued by the TPLF officials and their operatives, Tigreans and none Tigreans alike, to transfer land and wealth to few individuals are undermining the power, prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people as a whole instead of building one.
The power, the prosperity and the peace of the Tigrean people are also not measured in the kilometers of roads, the number of airports, factories, and schools TPLF built for the Tigrean people at the expense of other Ethiopians or by diverting the national budget of Ethiopia to Tigray. Instead, the power, the prosperity, and the peace of the Tigrean people are secured and measured by building an Ethiopian society where the Commonwealth of the country is shared fairly on the bases of the principle of equity and equality. If anything, the policies the TPLF pursued over the last 27 years are the antithesis of the principles of fairness, equity and equality one expects from any government.
The power, the prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are not measured by the power of the TPLF officers and security personnel to kill, arrest and torture innocent Ethiopians solely because of politically advocating the national interests of other Ethiopian nations and nationalities. Instead, the power, the prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are better protected by establishing a society based on the rule of law where the interests and rights of the minority are equally protected as the interests and rights of the majority by allowing freedom of expressions, assembly, and associations.
The power, the prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are not secured by the power of TPLF officers’ today’s capability to organize, arm and deploy the Somali Janjaweed Militia to invade and displace close to one million Oromo citizens in Eastern and Southern part of Oromia from their ancestral lands. Instead, the power, the prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are more secured by opposing the actions of the TPLF officers and holding them accountable for their evil deeds by standing the with the Oromo people to build powerful, prosperous and peaceful Oromia where all Ethiopians including Tigreans could live in peace.
Neither is the power, the prosperity and the peace of the Tigrean people secured when TPLF military and security officers enable and support the Somali Janjaweed Militia to carry out a policy of ethnic cleansing by evicting and uprooting close to one hundred thousand Oromo civilians from the Somali Regional State based merely on their ethnic background. Instead, the power, the prosperity and the peace of the Tigrean people are more secured if they stand against all forms of ethnic cleansing practices anywhere in the world let alone the one being engineered and organized by their own sons and daughters against their own fellow citizens, the Oromo people.
It is not also a show of the power, the prosperity and the peace of the Tigrean people when the TPLF leadership at the urge of their security and military officers prohibit Ethiopian Federal institutions and international organizations not to provide humanitarian aid for Oromo civilians displaced and evicted from the Somali Region by TPLF organized, armed and deployed Somali Janjaweed Militia. Instead, the power, prosperity, and peace of the Tigrean people are dependent on opposing such actions of the TPLF and by standing with the Oromo people who are being ethnically cleansed today. I hope it will not be lost on the mind of any Tigrean with sound mind the precedents, the practices and the implications of ethnic cleansing of the Oromo people from the Somali Region by the Somali Janjaweed Militia are likely to happen again against other Ethiopians including the Tigreans unless checked and stopped now.
In short, the power, the prosperity and the peace of the Tigrean people are not dependent on what the TPLF has been doing in Tigray over the last twenty-seven years or will do in the future. Rather, it is more depend on the misdeeds of the TPLF in the rest of the Ethiopia in the name of the Tigrean people to benefit few Tigreans as opposed to 80 to 85% of Tigreans who still live in rural Tigray in abject poverty not any different from their Oromo or Amhara counterparts.
Therefore, it is my sincere and honest belief that it is at the best interests of the Tigrean people to oppose what the TPLF is doing in the rest of Ethiopia, particularly in Oromia against the Oromo people, not for the sake of supporting the Oromo people but to protect their own national interests as a people, not only in years and decades to come but also for generations to come. If the Tigrean people fail to heed this advice and continue to side with the TPLF, it should be clear to all Tigreans in the country and in the Diaspora that the TPLF is permanently destroying the national interests of the Tigrean People and their bond with the rest of the Ethiopian people!
If one Tigre doubts this note as politically motivated, one should trust and take to heart the statement of the Honorable Abadula Gemeda, the Speaker of the Ethiopian Parlament, who said he is resigning from his post in the parliament not only by opposing the attacks of the TPLF/EPRDF lead Ethiopian government on the dignity and national interests of the Oromo people but also its refusal to stop these attacks and correct the misdeeds. That is a profound accusation of the TPLF security and military officers who are committing unspeakable injustice and crimes against the Oromo people in the borderlands, in courts, in prisons, and in the middle of the country.
